This week we are going to the Forêt de Fontainebleau with Laurence. Here is her information:
The hike will start from Fontainebleau-Avon. It should be about 16 km.
We will take chemin Baudrillard and then follow chemin Denecourt N°2 to the tower and then continue on to beautiful Rocher Cassepot (chemin N°3). Part two of the hike will take us to Rocher St Germain (chemin N°4) to catch chemin Denecourt N°12 and GR1 to Bois le Roi.
This walk includes several slopes and, at Rocher St Germain, a few rocks and narrow passages that may not agree with bad knees but only for a few minutes(15min); if you have a map, there is a way around those rocks. We will have to maintain a good pace.
Lunch will be between 12:30 and 1pm at Rocher St Germain, bring a snack.
GETTING THERE:
-Take train 51815 from Gare de Lyon direction Montargis at 9.19, arriving at Fontainebleau-Avon at 9.57, Zone 5.
I will meet you at Gare de Lyon, we will sit in the last car as usual.
Return trains from Bois le Roi at 15.37 (arr:16.11) - 16.07 (arr:16.41). There is a café next to the station.
If you do not have a "Passe Navigo", buy a "Mobilis 5 zones" (15,65€)
Come with good footwear, warm and rainproof gear as temperatures are now much cooler. You will also need a lunch.

Now for The TWO BOBS - PART #2: IN SEARCH OF AUTUMN COLOR.
On Wednesday November 6, Bob Levy and Robert Deutsch will lead us 14-15 kilometers, from Saint Remy Les Chevreuse (ZONE #5) through forest and village; a route designed for the likelihood of discovering Autumn’s golds and reds. The route takes us up the abandoned railroad right-of-way which once led to Rambouillet, through picturesque villages Montabe and Gometz le Chatel, then descending along a second railroad bed – once going to Chartres, and crossing the Viaduct des Feuvettes to the village Bures sur Yvette (ZONE #5). Lunch will be in the Foret Gif sur Yvette. The views from Gometz le Chatel are alone worth the effort of the walk.
NOTES:
1. The day includes two climbs. The first occurs early in the walk (kilometer 3); steep and rocky but short. The second, to Gometz and following lunch, is more gradual but longer.
2. There is a shorter alternative (10 kilometers) available this week. Following lunch there is a direct route, downhill but steep, to the RER at Gif sur Yvette. A simple map will be provided to those who choose this option.
3. TECHNICAL STOPS: there should be MANY. The first is within 15 minutes of the start.
4. THE PACE: It will be lively but not quite as fast as other weeks. One of the two leaders suffers from a minor hip ailment. But good news. This will give us all a chance to sing. To sing loudly. All without losing our breath.
5. MUD: Yes, there will be mud. Much will appear in the morning and some (but not all) can be avoided. Even so, water resistant shoes / boots are the order of the day.
MEET UP Information: Chatelet – Les Halles, RER ‘B’, DIRECTION: SAINT REMY LES CHEVREUSE, at the REAR (THE LAST CAR) OF THE PLATFORM. Arrive at station by 9:15 for the train at 9:24. This train stops at ST. MICHEL, LUX, PORT ROYAL, DENFERT, UNIVERSITAIRE, and BOURG LA REINE: to board at these stations please add approx 2 minutes for each station following Chatelet. – Les Halles.

hike for October 30
This week on October 30 Judy Choat will be our leader. Here is her information:
Our hike will go from Meulan - Hardricourt into the lovely Vexin countryside. The distance is 18 km and it is hilly . None of the hills are particularly long or difficult but there are a lot of them! Worth the effort though as the scenery is excellent and the small villages which we pass through are quaint with plenty of lavoirs, old churches, little streams and an old mill .
An early start fits best I am sorry to say , and even so lunch will be a little late so there will be a banana stop after 8 Km.
TRAVEL
Take train Moca from St Lazare direction Mantes la Jolie at 8.43, arriving at Meulan - Hardricourt at 9.37, Zone 5
I WILL DRIVE so will see you at the front of the station ( I think there is only one exit )
Return trains from Meulan - Hardricourt are every half an hour 15.43 (optimistic) , 16.11 (most likely ) , 16.44 (fallback!)
Come with your usual enthusiasm , good footwear (remember my reputation as Mme Mud and the season) , warm and rainproof gear and lunch. Halloween costumes are optional

Two hikes for October 23
Dear Hikers,
For next Wednesday, October 23, we are lucky to have two options, a shorter walk to be led by Dominique Raveau and a much longer one which will be led by Michel Browne.
Also, it's time to think about offering to lead a hike starting the first Wednesday in November, for the slate is blank. You don't need to have experience as a leader. There will always be someone to help you either to scout the walk ahead of time or on the day of the hike. Our group of faithful leaders has been reduced by moves away from Paris, by physical problems and by long vacations. Therefore, we need to swell the ranks of leaders with people like you!
Now for the hike descriptions:
Hello walkers,
For next Wednesday I propose a short leisure walk through the parks of Chatenay-Malabry (Arboretum where we'll admires trees, Vallée aux Loups where we'll picnic and Parc de la Maison de Chateaubriand where we'll stop to have a cup of coffee or some patisserie in its Salon de thé).
The walk will end around 2 pm unless we're in the mood for more...
To get there:
From CHATELET LES HALLES take RER B (train SORI) at 09:32, direction ROBINSON
The same train leaves from DENFERT-ROCHEREAU at 09:40. Be there earlier;
Arrival at ROBINSON at 09:58
At the Gare de Robinson walk to the head of the train then to the right and take the exit Av.Jules Guesde. The meeting place-on the top of the stairs.
Return from ROBINSON - trains every 15 minutes.

For those who “really” feel like sweating it, I propose an exceptionally long walk of 23 km. and we will keep a brisk pace all along. But it will be very interesting since the goal is to walk most of the Dhuys waterway that used to supply Paris with fresh water (among other springs) and was built under Napoleon the third. It goes on top of the hills that surround a good part of the eastern side of the parisian suburbia. The waterway forms a wide two lane path that winds in and out of magnificent woody areas still untouched in spite of rampant urbanization. To avoid the quite distressing and to say the least not attractive sections surrounded by Gagny, Montfermeil and Clichy sous Bois, we’ll start from the southern part of the city of Villepinte where the RER B station “Vert Galant” is located. After going through the National Forest of Sevran along the Ourcq canal, we’ll climb the hill south through the city of Vaujours to reach the Dhuys waterway. Once on it we’ll just follow the path to Thorigny-sur-Marne.
Travel information :
Getting to Vert Galant:
Rendez-vous at the Gare du Nord station, RER B Line, direction Mitry Mory, train IDOL leaving at 9h27. This train passes Denfert Rochereau at 9:15, St. Michel Notre Dame at 9:21, Chatelet les Halle's at 9:23. Train arrives in station “Vert Galant”, zone 4, at 9h 50.
Return to Paris will be from the Lagny-Thorigny station, (also in zone 4), on Line P from Meaux to Gare de l’est, trains every half hour.
Remember your picnic lunch, water and rain gear. To be on the safe side you should have a cell phone with you along with the leader's number. This applies to all walks of course.

The walk on Wednesday continues the one that took us to Champs-sur-Marne on
July 31. This time we'll press on to Noisiel.

Noisiel is known as the home of the Menier chocolate factory. In the second
half of the 19th century Menier had become the biggest producer of chocolate
in the world. In 1872 the architect Jules Saulnier was commissioned to
design a radically ultra-modern factory, while housing, schools and a
retirement home were built for the workers.
Now the factory is the French headquarter of Nestlé. Our walk there will
include some detours to neighboring parks and ponds and a visit to the ahead
of its time ferme du Buisson, now used as a theater. Also a visit of the new
town that had emerged from 1975. Here a wide array of contemporary
architecture is on show, created by architects such as Jean Nouvel or
Christian de Portzamparc.

Dear Hikers,
Next Wednesday, September 25, Daniel Robinot will lead our hike. It is a 21/22 km loop with the possibility of leaving the group after 14 km. Here is his information followed by a rough translation in English.
Les journées sont encore longues aussi je vous propose une randonnée entre forêt et campagne afin de vous dégourdir les jambes. 21/22 km avec très peu de dénivelé. Nous partirons par la Forêt des 4 Piliers afin de regarder le reflet du soleil dans un petit étang puis nous nous dirigerons vers Bazainville, Richebourg et Tacoignères par la campagne. A Tacoignères, possibilité de reprendre un train pour Paris. Dans ce cas, la randonnée ne fait plus que 14 km. Pour ceux qui restent, retour par la Forêt des 4 Piliers. Ne pas oublier votre pain :-) il n'existe aucun commerce sur le parcours ni "bistrot" à la gare pour conclure cette journée.
Comme d'habitude, vêtements et chaussures adaptés, surtout si le soleil nous fait défaut, pic-nique et bonne humeur.

As the days are still long, I am proposing a 21/22 km hike to stretch your legs, between the forest and the countryside on mostly flat terrain. While in the Foret des Quatre Piliers we will be able to admire the sun's reflection in a pond. Later we will head through the countryside towards Bazainville, Richebourg and Tacoigneres where it will be possible to leave the walk early. (14km) For those who carry on, we will return to Orgerus-Behoust by the forest.
Don't forget your picnic lunch. There are no shops along the way and no bistro for a drink at the end of the hike. :-(
As usual, wear comfortable hiking shoes and sun/rain protection. Don't forget your good humor either!

Dear Hikers,
This
week we will go on an adventure outside of zone 5 !! to La Ferte Milon
and walk 18.5 km to Crouy sur Ourcq (safely back
in zone 5) . In La Ferte Milon there is a huge unfinished 14th century
chateau which was even further dismantled by Henry IV thus leaving a
really impressive facade which dominates the town but has nothing behind
it . After walking up a short gentle hill to look at this chateau and
the church we will come back down to the Ourcq canal and follow its
many meanders for several kilometers and then a second canal (all
completely level) . The final part of the walk is through countryside
and village and involves a couple of short easy hills . Just as we
arrive at the station of Crouy sur Ourcq we will pass the 14th/15th
century ruins of the Chateau du Houssoy.
TRAVEL
An
early start I am afraid - we will catch the 8.51 train ZIMO from Paris
Est direction Chateau Thierry as far as Trilport arriving 9.20 where we
have 8 minutes to change trains and catch the 9.28 train FOMO from
Trilport to La Ferte Milon arriving 9.54
The
return journey will be from Crouy sur Ourcq changing again at Trilport
and the trains are hourly at thirteen minutes past the hour
TICKETS
Buying
tickets for this trip appears to me to be unnecessarily complicated but
unless you know a better way this is what I would suggest :
It
seems impossible to buy a ticket at any of the machines (green ,yellow
or grey/blue) for La Ferte Milon so I would suggest you buy it ahead of
time (as there is often a queue) from a ticket office - the one at Gare
de l'Est is by platform 17.
For the return trip it is easier as Crouy sur Ourcq is in Zone 5
Lunch may be a little on the late side so we will have a pause for some "elevenses" (snack)
Don't forget water , appropriate clothing and footwear , and your lunch
PS For ladies of a shy disposition there is not much cover for a technical stop during the first hour!

DECOUVERTE DE LA CAMPAGNE MANTAISE
Cette randonnée de 16 km nous fera parcourir la campagne mantaise depuis le plateau intérieur jusqu'aux abords un peu plus valonnés de la vallée de la Seine. Possibilité de racourcir cette rando de 2 ou 3 km en prenant un bus pour rejoindre la gare au retour.
Départ: gare St Lazare à 9 h 07 en direction d'Evreux arrivée à Bréval (zone 5) à 9 h 52. Je vous rejoindrai dans le dernier wagon à la gare de Mantes la Jolie
Retour: gare de Mantes-la-Jolie à 15 h 08 (avec un vif allure) pour une arrivée à St Lazare à 15 h 40, sinon une heure plus tard.
N'oubliez pas votre pique-nique, une tenue adaptée à la météo et votre bonne humeur habituelle.

An opportunity to learn and practice Breton dancing. Free with 8 euro fee for the Center d'Animation. September 19 to June 12...four Thursdays on and four Thursdays not...the dates are on the attached notice. The dancing is energetic and the lessons are in French only, so you need to know your left foot from your right in French...mostly Breton dances but some French folk dance cross-over.

We will walk in the Meudon forest, called green lung of West Paris. It is remarkable for its rugged landscape, its many ponds and it also houses many curiosities.
At first we will go to the Meudon Park Observatory and on the terrace of the observatory we will admire the panorama of Paris.
