Wednesday 1 December, end of a hundred-kilometre hike

The Loing at Moret

Dear hikers,

A 100 kilometre-hike !

Next Wednesday we'll end our walk along the GR2. We began a year ago at Le Plessis Chenêt and in several stages we've walked some hundred kilometres across the Seine et Marne. The banks of the Seine await us once more. We'll see two major tributaries, the Loing and the Yonne, as well as the canal barges at St Mammès.

Our walk will take us from Champagne sur Seine to La Grande Paroisse, about 12 km. As an option, we can continue to Montereau Fault Yonne for a walk of 21 km. This last part has not been thoroughly checked out, so we may be fairly late getting back to Paris.

To get there we'll meet at the platform and take the 9.05 train from the Gare de Lyon headed for Montargis. We arrive in Melun at 9.31. There we change trains to catch the 9.36 train headed for Montereau, arriving at Champagne sur Seine (zone 6) at 10.00. Note that we have only five minutes between trains at Melun so we'll want to be fairly nimble getting from one to the other.

The return from La Grande Paroisse (zone 6) is either
  • 14.35 — Paris 15.41 change at Melun
  • 15.35 — Paris 16.41 change at Melun
The return from Montereau (zone 6) gives us three possibilities.
  • 17.30 — Paris 18.43 change at Melun
  • 18.10 — Paris 19.13 direct
  • 18.10 — Paris 19.41 change at Melun
A six-zone Mobilis covers all this. For Parisians, separate one-way tickets are slightly cheaper. If you're coming from the suburbs, the Mobilis is a couple of euros cheaper and far more convenient.

*Getting there*. Attention, we will change trains in Melun.

* At *GARE DE LYON*, Take the train at *9:05* (direction Montargis).
Stop at MELUN 9:31.
At MELUN (connection), Take the train 9:36 (direction Montereau)
arriving at CHAMPAGNE-SUR-SEINE at 10.00
.
----
*Return.* -  La Grande-Paroisse 14:35 arriving at Paris 15:41
or 15:35 arriving at Paris 16:41. Changement à Melun pour ces deux trains.
--------------------------------------------------------
Retour :
Montereau 17:30, Paris 18:43 (changement à Melun).
Montereau 18:10, Paris 19:13 (direct Paris).
Montereau 18:10, Paris 19:41 (changement à Melun).
---------------------------------------------------------
Purchase a one-way ticket as the return will be from a different station,
or, If you are coming from the suburbs into Paris... then
Champagne-sur-Seine, a ''Mobilis'' ticket for 6 zones is perhaps slightly
cheaper than purchasing separate tickets.

Wednesday 24 November in the forêt de Rosny

Dear Hikers,

This week, Claude will lead us on a lovely 18 km hike (430 m. altitude difference) in the Forêt de Rosny which is out past Mantes-la-Jolie in the department of the Yvelines.  This hike has been postponed twice so we're crossing our fingers that the SNCF will NOT decide to strike again. Here is his information.

This forest, the most important in the western Ile-de-France, formerly belonged  to the château of Rosny-sur-Seine which was owned by Sully, minister to King Henry IV. There are a couple of noteworthy attractions in the forest: a 300 year old oak tree with a 4,20 meter circumference and the vestiges of a chateau, Les Beurons, built for Simon Letellier, counselor and doctor for Louis XIII.

(utilisation du billet Mobilis ou d'un ticket de métro) Please leave the train and station quickly in order not to miss the bus which will take us from Mantes to Rosny.
We will walk at a lively pace so as to be able to catch the bus at Magnanville and then the 17.08 train for Paris.

Wednesday 17 November in the forest of Fontainebleau

Next week, November 17, we will walk in the beautiful Forêt de Fontainebleau with François Bechet. Our usual intrepid leader, Ellen Vivet, is recuperating from foot surgery so François has generously offered to lead us through this beautiful and unique forest.
The train leaves the Gare de Lyon at 10:05, destination Montargis, arriving at Fontainebleau-Avon at 10:40.Return trains are twice an hour. We will meet at the end of the quai around 9:45 and then get on the last car going out of the station. In recent months the trains bound for Montargis leave from the Salle . Be sure to look at the Departures board. The two departure areas are color coded, blue and yellow.
Sturdy hiking shoes are essential. Be prepared for rain and mud.  Hiking poles might come in handy. Bring a picnic lunch as usual. Thermos season has begun!

If you need to contact François for any reason, his cell phone number is 06 14 14 52 00.
See you on Wednesday!

Wednesday 10 November, a new twist on the vallée de Chevreuse

On Wednesday 10 November, Bob Levy will lead a hike through the valley formed by the river Yvette, beginning in Lozère. The hike's final 5 km include leaving the river for a climb through the lovely forest of Gif sur Yvette, with a scenic descent into the town of St Rémy lès Chevreuse. There we'll take the RER B and return to Paris.

Many of you have walked in this area, walks which included the Madeleine château at Chevreuse. The château is not included in this hike.  In fact the hike proposed covers a part of the region which you have likely not walked. It is quite diverse; it weaves through villages (Lozère, Orsay, Bures, and Gif) before climbing to the forest. If we are lucky, we may catch the final autumn golds, both along the river and especially through the forest.

The entire length of the hike is approximately 14 km.  For those of you who want a shorter walk, there will be optional returns from the towns mentioned above. The walk parallels the RER B, which runs every 15 or 20 minutes during the day.

We will take the 9:26 RER B train PLAN from Châtelet Les Halles, destination St Rémy lès Chevreuse. We will ride in the last car going out. The same train can be taken at St Michel Notre Dame at 9:28.  As it proceeds south through Paris it stops at Luxembourg, Port Royale, Denfert, and Cité Universitaire.  Your outbound ticket should be to Lozère, though a round-trip ticket to St Rémy costs scarcely more and will save you time at the end of the walk.

Picnic lunches, hiking boots, and water-repellent clothing are, of course, in order.

Bob Levy

Walk Wednesday 3 November in the Bois de Vincennes

Lake Daumesnil in the bois de Vincennes

Led by Daniel and Jean

Come join us for a 3.5-hour walk that will take us to the four lakes in the Bois de Vincennes, with a stop for a snack at the gazebo then a lunch in an old cartridge factory which now houses several theaters. Lunch time at 1 pm.

With your snack and lunch you can bring water. Taken in moderation it doesn't hurt anybody.

The walk will be led by Daniel & Jean LOL and could be flexible according to the weather or whatever else. Shorter distances are possible.

Meeting − 10:00 am in the square des Combattants-d'Indochine, at the foot of the golden statue, metro Porte Dorée (Metro line 8). We will also be returning by metro.

You can bring your good humour ;  if not... chocolate, cake, sweets, coffee, pets, girl(boy)friend, backpack, only if you like.

It is also a good idea if you give Daniel your cell phone number, just in case…
